The Swallows of Kabul: Chapter 1

In this chapter, it is shown how the people of kabul react with death. A woman is stoned to death because she is a prostitute. If that were the case in america, there would be a lot less people. I was surprised to see that the people of kabul are excited to kill this woman who has really not done much wrong, but i guess that customs and traditions are different all over the world. Also, I am wondering who these militia men are and if they have anything to do with these public executions. Since it is the begining of the book, i am a bit confused about everything that is happening. Atiq Shaukat seems as though he is the prison keeper, Mohsen Ramat is a person living in Kabul, who disagrees with these killings, and Quassim Abdul Jabbar is the transporter of the prisoner. It made me laugh when I read Abdul Jabbar because he is a basketball player, but i realized that is not who they are talking about here. I cant help but feel bad for the woman because i do not think she deserved to die that way.

The militia men are part of the Taliban, a group of religious zealots who run the country with an iron fist. The girl was stoned to death because the Taliban demands people obey their strict laws.

Don't worry too much about the politics just yet. Keep reading, and you'll be fine. It seems you have a good grasp of the main characters so far.

Don't forget to log onto 2 other people's blogs and make a comment to their comments on Chapter 1 ok?

Mr. Farrell

PS I thought the same thing about Abdul Jabbar :-) It's a common name combo over there I guess.

I can't believe that these people are so excited about death either. If this was in America, there would be so many protest groups or a lawsuit or something that would never let this happen. I didn't know that Abdul Jabbar was a basketball player, but that's funny to think about!

I know. These people act like killing someone is just a game, 20 points to the one with the killing shot or something. It's hard to even imagine something like that in America...cool about the basketball thing though!

Like you, Hannah Beck, i was also confused by the settings, characters, and events. But i thought the beginning was definetly a good way to capture the reader's attention. And with different cultures, and different kinds of names, it is hard to follow.

P.S. love the picture, and............................................................................BLOOD! (baaahahahaha)

I was really confused about the militia men at first as well. I still dont understand what purpose they serve other than causing problems. I think the prostitute had a very harsh punishment as well, but that is just their customs.
