Chapter 6

I like Zunaira. She sees that Mohsen needs her support but also is not afraid to tell him how she feels. The women of Kabul are now nothing. The taliban has put some harsh rules against them showing who they really are. The can not hold hands! They must wear a burqua in public, not showing their face or hair. Mohsen wants things to be like they were but Zunaira believes that that is not possible. He wants to go for a walk but Zunaira feels that would degrade her in ways that, back in the good times, would not be possible. Was Zunaira fired from her job because of the taliban? Even though, Zunaira goes on a walk with Mohsen because she loves him and he needs her. I agree so much with Zunaira and i hope that her and Mohsen can somehow become what they once were. Kabul is such a horrible place.

Zunairia is a neat character, and not a typical woman living in Kabul. She has a relationship with her husband that few women have, which is being able to speak her mind openly. They are both educated and able to realize the world around them is wrong.

Yes, she was a magistrate, but when the Taliban came to power, she was dismissed for no reason. (simply because she was a woman) It is now a very sexist society she now lives in.

Yeah, I was amazed that she was a magistrate before the Taliban. I have always kind of thought that women never had any positions of power in Afghanistan, or the Middle East for that matter. But now I know that they did, they just were kicked out of those positions once the Taliban came. I don't know if I would be able to live in a world like that knowing that I was better than the man they replaced me with...
